While staying with my in-laws in PA in the US, we visited a farm to pick berries from a family friend’s recommendation. We loved it so much that we went twice within 3 weeks, the first time picking blueberries & raspberries, and blackberries & blueberries for the second time. There is a lot more than just fruit picking, and we spent at least 4-5 hours every time. Our 3Y4M daughter and we all had a blast at the orchard perfect for preschool kids.
Berry picking in the summer
The supplies vary all the time, we always check their website for the latest conditions. We went at the beginning and the end of the Summer Fest featuring blueberries, which we picked both times. The blueberry farm required a wagon ride, which was very entertaining going past rows of apple trees. For raspberries and blackberries, they were walkable from the entrance. For me, blueberries are easier to pick than raspberries and blackberries but the latter ones are more fun. It is easy to pick a bunch of blueberries at once. For raspberries and blackberries, it takes more examination and searching to pick the ripe ones that would come right off without having to pull hard, which comes with more gratification. All these three fruits are perfect for little kids as they can pick with their hands at their height.
Flower picking
Picking flowers was only available on our second visit, we were each given one card to pick one flower per person. We only got to pick sunflowers before our daughter ran out of steam, but it was a fun experience and the sunflower field was beautiful with large flowers all facing the same way. Other than sunflowers, they also had lavender, zinnia, and snapdragons on the day we went.
Rides
They had two amusement park rides, Scrambler and Carousel that were perfect for little kids. Our daughter loved both rides, laughing so hard at the Scrambler and the Carousel was a relaxing break. We got on the ride right away even on a weekend.
Lakeland express train
They have a proper train station, and we loved riding the train going through the farm and passing several fields. We saw the berry farms, apple trees, pumpkin patch, Christmas trees, and their lavender field.
Cow train express
The cow train is one of my favorites, the seats feel hand-crafted from buckets that are decorated as a cow with a braid. The route is shorter than the train, but the ride feels closer to being on a farm.
Big bubbles
Our daughter spent some time figuring out how to make giant bubbles at the bubble barns. They have multiple buckets at each barn, and they can produce very long bubbles when the wind is right.
Jumbo Jumpers
The orchard has two trampoline pillow areas for small and big kids to jump separately. Our daughter doesn’t like jumping when there are kids around, so we waited when it was quieter and our daughter had a lot of fun.
Little surprises
The park has small fun things here and there, our favorite is a singing & dancing tractor. The music and motion matched the beat perfectly, we were all very amused and danced with it a little bit. There is also a swing in front of the lavender field, and an old steam train head with a crank to power it.
Goat encounter
This interactive experience allows guests to get up close with some friendly goats, though we just stayed outside and observed. Perfect for all ages, this attraction offers the opportunity to feed, pet, and interact with the goats in their spacious enclosure. The goat food was available at the retail tent for $3, and there was a sink for washing hands right next to it.
Lunch
Both times, we got the smash burger at the burger stand. During the week, burgers were the main option for a savory meal. On weekends, they had more stands like grilled cheese and mac & cheese. Our daughter had the burger kids meal, which included a smaller burger with fries. I tried the peanut butter & blueberry jam smash burger the second time, it was quite interesting but a bit heavy without the lettuce and tomato. The burgers took quite a while both times around 12:30 PM the prime lunch time. Near the lunch tables, there is a lawn with a few games like corn hole and dice. Our daughter enjoyed playing the corn hole while we waited for the food. On weekends, they have bands playing on stage in front of the lawn.
Tickets
The tickets cost $16.95 on weekdays and $20.95 when buying online with a 15% discount, and we purchased the tickets online on the same day. Kids 2 and under are free. Tickets are more expensive on weekends since some vendors and shows are only available on weekends. At the entrance, the staff gave us wristbands and berry containers (one per person), along with optional cards for flower picking. The tickets included all the fruit and/or flowers we picked. The farm is cashless, and mobile or credit card payment is available everywhere in the park.
Bathrooms & diaper changing
The only thing I wished for at the orchard was an official bathroom. At the time of writing, they only had portable bathrooms that were not very kid-friendly. We also did not see any diaper-changing tables, and just changed it in the car.
Wrap
We are lucky to live only a 30-minute drive away from the orchard, and we will certainly be back next year. The orchard is only open from June to November, they have strawberries before July, and apples & pumpkins in the fall. We hope to make the strawberries next time.
